What Is Puff Screen Printing?

Puff ink is a plastisol screen printing ink mixed with a heat-activated additive. When your garment runs through the dryer, the ink expands and rises off the fabric, leaving an embossed, 3D print with real texture. Puff an entire design for a bold look, or raise just one element, like a logo or a word, so it pops against the flat ink around it.
  • Raised 3D texture you can see and feel
  • Durable: holds its puff through regular wear and washing
  • A streetwear favorite for premium logo treatments

How Does Puff Screen Printing Work?

Puff designs are printed with the same process as standard plastisol. The difference is the additive and the cure. Here is what to plan for when you design for puff:
  • Color matching The additive shifts colors slightly, so exact Pantone matches are harder. Lighter colors are easier to match than darker ones.
  • Fabric weight The raised effect reads stronger on thinner fabrics and softer on heavyweight fleece.
  • Mix puff with flat inks Combine puff and standard ink in one design for a layered, dimensional look.

What Can You Puff Print On?

T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and sweaters, on cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, denim, and spandex. Puff is an especially popular upgrade for puff print hoodies, where raised ink pairs well with heavyweight fleece. Want raised stitching instead of ink? Check out 3D puff embroidery.

Approximately. The puff additive shifts hues, so exact Pantone matching is harder than with standard plastisol. Lighter colors match more easily than darker ones.

The process is the same, but puff ink contains a heat-activated additive that expands in the dryer, so the finished print is raised and dimensional instead of flat.
