Reading your number
What your stitch count means
Every embroidery shop prices by stitch count, so your number tells you where your logo lands before anyone sends you a quote. Here's how we think about it on the production floor.
Left chest, hat front, sleeve
Most business logos land here. A clean 2 or 3 color logo at 3.5 to 4" wide usually runs 4,000 to 8,000 stitches. This is the sweet spot for polos, work shirts and caps.
Detailed logos, big chest hits
Solid filled shapes, lots of small text, or a logo pushed past 4" wide. Still very doable, but worth a conversation about simplifying the art if you're embroidering a lot of pieces.
Full backs and jacket backs
A 10 to 12" back design with real fill area runs long. Most full backs we stitch land between 25,000 and 80,000 stitches, and the dense ones go higher. The artwork drives it more than the size.
The method
How to estimate stitch count for embroidery
You don't need digitizing software to get close. Embroiderers have used the same rule of thumb for decades: figure out how much of your design is actually covered by thread, then multiply by a density number. Here's the version this tool runs.
Measure the finished design area
Width times height, in inches, at the size it'll be sewn. Not the size of your file. A left chest logo is usually 3.5 to 4" wide, a hat front is capped at about 2.25" tall by the hoop, and a full back is 10 to 12" wide.
Figure out the coverage
What percentage of that rectangle is thread versus bare fabric? An outlined wordmark might be 25%. A solid badge can be 80% or more. The estimator reads your image pixel by pixel, strips the background, and measures this for you.
Multiply by a density factor
Standard embroidery fill lands around 1,500 to 2,200 stitches per square inch of covered area, depending on how solid the fill is. Satin stitch lettering and outlines sit at the low end. Tatami fill with heavy underlay sits at the top.
Add a little for every color change
Each color change adds tie-off, trim and lock stitches. It's small per color, but a 7 color logo adds up. The estimator counts the distinct colors in your file and you can correct it.
Example: a 3.75" × 1.25" wordmark with 35% coverage at standard density is 4.7 sq in × 0.35 × 1,800 ≈ 3,000 stitches. On big fills the estimator tapers the density down, because digitizers use longer stitches across large areas.
| Design type | Typical coverage | Fill style to pick |
|---|---|---|
| Text only wordmark, outlined icons | 20 to 40% | Light |
| Standard business logo, mix of text and shapes | 35 to 60% | Standard |
| Badges, crests, solid shields, mascots | 60 to 90% | Dense |
Estimating from an SVG, PNG or JPG file
An SVG or a PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest estimate, because there's no background to guess at. A JPG works too. The tool finds the most common edge color and treats it as the background, so a logo on a plain white or black rectangle reads correctly. Photos, gradients and drop shadows throw it off, and they'd have to be redrawn for embroidery anyway.
Why counts move
What changes an embroidery stitch count
Two logos the same size can come back from the digitizer thousands of stitches apart. These are the levers.
Fill versus satin
A shape filled edge to edge with tatami stitch costs far more stitches than the same shape outlined in satin. If your logo has big solid blocks, that's where the count lives. Switching a solid background to an outline is the single biggest stitch saver.
Size, but not the way you'd think
Doubling the width quadruples the area. A 4" logo at 6,000 stitches doesn't become 12,000 at 8" wide, it becomes closer to 20,000. That's why full backs cost what they do and why we taper the math above 10 square inches.
Underlay and pull compensation
Every good digitizer lays down stitches you'll never see. Underlay stabilizes the fabric so the top stitches sit flat, and it can add 15 to 25% to the count. Polos and pique knits need more of it than twill or canvas.
Hats and structured garments
Structured caps are sewn on a curved frame with a stiff buckram front. Digitizers add underlay and run slightly denser to keep the design crisp, so the same logo picks up roughly 10% on a hat versus a flat shirt. The tool applies that bump automatically.
Lettering
Small text is stitch hungry and unforgiving. Column (satin) lettering above 0.25" tall sews clean and cheap. Below that, counts go up as the digitizer adds density to keep letters readable, and the result still may not hold up.
Thread colors and trims
Each color change adds lock stitches, a trim and a short run-in. It's a small number, but a logo with 8 colors adds up and slows the machine. Fewer colors almost always means a cleaner, faster, better looking stitch-out.
